Most beans will come to maturity before the first nip of frost hits here in the Midwest, so get those beans in the ground.

Different bean types to try:

Tender French Filet Beans which are tender and stringless, slender and will be ready for picking 50-55 days for bush and 50-67 for pole.

Lima Beans which can stand the hot and humid heat of summer. They become mature 75 days for bush and 85 for the pole.

Yard-long beans or also known as Asparagus beans are long and slender pods that can be 12-18 inches long when harvested. These beans come in a variety of colors; green, burgundy or a beautiful streaked. The become mature in 80 days.

10 Tips for Growing Green Beans:

#1 Plant where they will get at least 10 hours of direct sunlight.

#2 Beans grow best when air temperatures reach 70Ā° to 80Ā°F, and soil temperature should be at least 60Ā°F

#3 Plant seeds 1ā€ deep with 3-4ā€ in between beans.

#4 Apply a good inch of mulch after the seedlings emerge. This helps to conserve moisture and keep the soil cool during hot spells because extreme heat can cause plants to drop their blossoms.

#5 Wait a week or two and plant a second sowing. This will give you ready to pick beans throughout the fall.

#6 Beans like a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5 so add an inch of compost to your soil before planting your seeds.

#7 Mexican bean beetles lay clusters of yellow eggs on leaves, handpick this pest in all life stages.

#8 Pick beans when they are young and tender. Nobody likes a tough bean.

#9 When picking beans, be gentle when pulling, so as not to damage plants.

# 10 Harvest pole beans twice a week to keep the plants producing.

Thank you for the tips. I actually grow lots of green beans and yard-long beans in my vegetable garden. Both of them being an integral part in Kerala Cusine. I grow green beans on poles and long yard beans on custom made nets.
    Thank you

We haven’t tried growing green beans. We’ll have to add it to our expanding garden next year.
