My favorite all time Blueberry Avocado and Spinach Superfood Smoothie, whew that’s a mouth full.
I know, I know it’s not an alcoholic beverage, but I felt like mixing it up a bit and throwing a healthy beverage at you on this Saturday. Â I have been playing with my after workout smoothies and my trainer gave me the blueberry avocado idea. Â If your anything like me you made a totally grossed out face when you heard the mix, but it works. Â I don’t know how, but it does.
This bad boy has all that you need for recovering with super foods to help fight inflammation in your muscles to giving you an energy boost when you need it.  I also throw these guys down on those afternoons when I seem to be hitting the exhaustion wall, for me, it’s around 3:00.  I usually start scrounging around in the pantry for something to eat that will make me feel better, and usually end up choosing something that is crappy for me. If I throw together a smoothie in  about 5 minutes I have just the thing to give me the  zing I need to make it through till dinner.
I’ll be experimenting and sharing as I go, so be expecting a few smoothies recipes on your Saturdays.
- 1 cup blueberries, frozen or fresh
- 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
- 1 cup almond-coconut milk (you can use just coconut or just almond)
- 1/2 ripe avocado, skinned and pitted
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 scoop protein powder (I used chocolate, but vanilla would be fine)(optional)
- 1/2 fresh ice
- Place all ingredients in blender and puree.
- Serve in glass.
- Add a few fresh blueberries (optional)

Great-looking recipe. I really like the addition of the cinnamon. Can’t wait to try – thanks!
Hey Blender Dude, Mixing cinnamon and honey together boosts their nutritional value!
Spinach is a great superfood because it has many anti-cancer properties and lots of vitamins like vitamin E, vitamin K and helps you digest well too http://healthy-superfoods.com/5-health-benefits-spinach-superfood/
I love this ingredients in this recipe as blueberries are one of my favourite partners to tender spinach in smoothies. This is the sort of smoothie I would love as a post-workout treat or an on-the-go breakfast as I’m flying out the door for work. Yum!
Had this this morning, replaced chia seeds with hemp hearts, and did half spinach/half arugula.. it was sooo good! Thank you for this!
Your so welcome Whit. Arugula is interesting, did it give it a bite?
This one’s a winner! I used flax seeds since that is all I had at the moment.
=o)
Jason,
Flax seed works just as well! Glad you liked it!

This was super yum! I was skeptical and made it largely because it used ingredients I had on hand. I was so pleasantly surprised! It will be in the regular rotation from now on. I did leave out the protein powder because I can’t do dairy, so I used chocolate almond milk. I can’t wait for the next one. Thank you!
Sallie, So glad you gave it a try. It doesn’t sound like it would work, but it just does! The chocolate almond milk is a great tip, thanks for sharing! xo Amy
Soymilk original has more nutrients and protein than almond milk and better flavor than vanilla, but chocolate soymilk might have more potassium and family fare and supermeracado have the best deals for that dairy free milk. I look up smoothies but use what I got kind of go a little random avocado doesn’t have much taste so I put a full one in the blender with other fruits.
Thanks for the information Christopher.
I just made this concoction. I’m drinking it this very moment.
The truth is, i don’t like it at all. I don’t understand?
I wanted to love it. It’s really pretty gross. The only
Ingredient i left out was the protein powder?
Sorry to hear that Rebecca. I have not made it without the protein powder, however one of my readers replaced it with chocolate almond milk with great results. Not sure why it tastes bad for you?
Enjoying this smoothie for lunch! By far, one of my favorite smoothies. Mine turned out light greenish-grey though. Maybe because my spinach blended first? Either way, it tastes great!
I just saw the comment above, about leaving out protein powder. I left that out as well, including halving the milk and honey. It was very delicious still. Just trying to cut calories and sugar.
Amy, Glad you enjoyed it. The color change could have been do to not as much milk and protein powder, but all that matters is that it tasted good!
xo Amy
Hi. I have just made the smoothie and hardly drank it. I have added maca powder, left out protein powder and ice ( didn’t have it). And I have used frozen spinach.I think its the taste of the milk that i hate and all smoothie tasted like that milk. Thinking to try just using coconut milk or just without milk.
Camilla, you changed a lot of the flavoring with the maca powder and omitting the protein powder and ice. Let me know if you like it better with just water.
Amy
How many calories would you say this smoothie is?
Fiona,
The smoothie at 24 ounces is 450 calories.
Amy
just a nod to the person who didn’t like the smoothie. WHICH blender you use DOES make a difference. I have a high powered blender now (vitamix, but I imagine Blendtec or the like would deliver a similiar consistency), and it puts all other blenders I had previously to shame. Seriously. It’s the difference between pulverized juice and a consistency that reminds me of already-chewed-for-you-spinach . . . that could easily explain why someone would use such a passionate word as “gross.” I liked it. Obviously not as sweet as if you omitted the spinach, but it doesn’t bother me . . and my kids drank it too. That’s as good as it gets! :-d
Hi there. This was my first avo smoothie and loved it. I also added apple peeled and cored by accident and its just as yum! Mine was also greyish prob because I blended the spinach and apple first before adding the remaining ingredients. Will definitely Krupp this one on probably as a lunch alternative at work at the desk!
I left out the chia seeds and protein powder because I did not have them available. This is the best smoothie I’ve ever had. It’s my first one with spinach. I also think the cinnamon just makes it delicious. Will need to start following your blog. Thanks for the recipe.
Nora,
So glad you like the smoothie, leaving out the chia seeds will not change the taste, as chia seeds are flavorless, just a great source of omega. FYI, you can pretty much add spinach to most smoothies, without a negative taste, the spinach is great with banana and strawberry smoothies too. Thanks for commenting. Amy
I just made this because I was looking for a creamy smoothie with avocado for my cleanse I am doing and it is AMAZING! I get that some people have to make adjustments to the original but then you really cant comment on said original one because they changed it…the only change I made was using Vanilla Almond milk because I didnt have coconut and halving the recipe as I wanted to cut the 450 calories. One of my favorite smoothies!
zlmom,
Glad to hear you like the smoothie, it is amazing how good it is. That avocado makes it so smooth and delicious. Yes, anytime you change the ingredients in a recipe, the results change. Cause and Effect. xo Amy
OMG!!!!! this is truly awesome!!!! I am drinking slowly so as to savor!!!!
It tastes great and I will definitely make it again. I halved the recipe for the sake of calories. Only issue I ran into was needing to add more almond milk as the blender would blend it. But it worked out great! Light and refreshing!
Really yummy! Love the coconut milk and avocado in there. I didn’t have any seeds or protein powder, but it’s still tasty.
Absolutely delicious!
Having just recently turned my eating habits around and buying a vitamix blender my partner and I were delight to find this delicious recipe that is infinitely tastier than than my old/unhealthy breakfasts. We both also find it makes you feel better/brighter/more energetic for the morning (we mix it with chocolate pro max lean protein powder).
I would unreservedly recommend people try making this smoothie. It is a trusted staple for us now.
Hi Caroline, Thank you so much for sharing your opinion on my smoothie. It is definitely a great way to start the morning, or to enjoy after a workout. Enjoy your vitamix, and keep up the healthy eating. xo Amy
Full marks!
Delicious! Love the addition of cinnamon, makes it taste like a “treat”! Fits perfectly in my NutriBullet too! Thanks, great recipe!
Amy, can I replace the honey with agave nectar? Will that affect their nutritional value together? Also, if I replace the 1 tbsp of honey with agave nectar, how much agave nectar should I use?
Katherine,
You can replace the honey with agave, yes, it will change the nutritional value, but not significantly. I do not use agave nectar so I would make a guess and say the ratio should be 1:1, but remember that agave has a sweeter taste than honey, so you will need to adjust to your tastes.
Hope that helps,
Amy
This is SOO good! It turned out thick and creamy, almost like a dessert, you wouldn’t know there was spinach in it unless someone told you. Highly recommended!
Just made this, omitting the protein powder and adding a touch of mint (because I had it.) This is spot on. I love it!
So glad you like it! xx
Thank you Amy for this awesome recipe. I have been wanting to incorporate avacado into a smoothie and this recipe is perfect. I love the taste and texture of this smoothie. I will be making this for my friends and family, plus sharing this recipe on facebook. Thank you again.
I suggest grinding the chia seeds sepatarely then adding them to make sure you get them fine otherwise you dont get as much of the benefits (same with flax except I purchase flaxseed meal)
Great recipe!
Awesome smoothie!!! Would love to have nutrition value on it.
Hi amy. I haven’t tried this yet. How important is the honey? The reason I ask is, I have COPD and honey is a trigger to an asthma type of attack. Is there something I can use to replace it? Thanks for your help. By the way, I am new to smoothies. I need to lose weight, I’m on thyroid, blood pressure, and blood thinning medications as well as breathing medications (Advair). I’m not necessarily trying to get off of them but, I don’t like dealing with side effects. Thanks again!
I left the honey out completely–I thought it still tasted great.
Thanks for sharing Jessie!
Hi Amy, I just read the article again. I don’t mind that the smoothie is not alcoholic. For the most part, I drink water. I do have a weakness for sweet tea and I love Green tea. And now smoothies. I never had a desire for alcohol. You can be sure, I will try your non-alcolic smoothies!
Can I use chocolate almond milk?
Ron, I have never tasted chocolate almond milk so I can’t answer you. I can’t imagine that it would taste bad. If you use it I would love to know how it turns out.
I used a frozen avocado half and left out the ice. I used my Nutri Bullet and no globby spinach or chia seeds. It was so good and like thick like a milk shake. I loved it. Too bad I dropped it and lost half of it. It was so good I was tempted to lick it off the floor! Great recipe! Thanks.
So glad you enjoyed the recipe Judy! Sounds like you need to hold tight to your next one!
i just had this for breakfast after my Crossfit workout! It was delicious, even with my not-so-tasty plant-based protein powder. I will definitely be making this quite often in the future. Thanks!!
So glad you liked it Donna. My friend has switched over to pea protein, she said she has to be creative with the additions to her shakes so that she can drink it a little easier. This is one of her favorites.
Loved the shake
Thank you
Your welcome Vicki, thanks for letting me know! 🙂
I just want to say this is delicious and my son has no idea there is Spinach and Avocado in this. The cinnamon seems to do a very good job disguising the greens.
Thank you for this delicious recipe.
Thanks for letting me know Alex, and I am glad your son enjoys it, avocado spinach and all!
I make this all the time, but blend the avacado seed right in with it. The health benifits of consuming the crushed and or blended seed are astronomical.
I have recently read how beneficial the seeds are for our health. I haven’t tried it yet, but I think its time.
Hi there!
Does this naturally come out in deep blue?
Thanks…
Hi Alethia, this smoothie does come out blue, it is in a glass with a blue rim which may make it look more blue.
Avocado and blueberry that good for me. Thanks for the recipe.
Love it minus the protein, honey, and the coconut or almond milk.
I usually make it with a whole small avocado, one cup blueberries, a small red apple, one cup of spinach a small piece of ginger. I add water and cool it with chia seeds for about one hour… delicious
