DC Rickey Cocktail

DC Rickey Cocktail 2

I am in DC this weekend with the family visiting our oldest son.  He rows for George Washington University and they are hosting their home regatta on the Potomac.   We choose this regatta to go visit with him because it is always the week of his birthday and the atmosphere in DC, with spring and the cherry blossoms is electric.   DC is one of my favorite cities, (No, it’s not only because my son lives there) because the vibrance of the people, they are out walking, running, biking, rowing enjoying the sights around them.  One of my favorite things to do is to run through Georgetown with my hubby down to the Potomac where we pick up the running trail till we end at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.  The sites along our run are breathtaking.

So in honor of our DC trip I offer up a DC cocktail.  I actually got the idea from a famous DC cocktail called Rickey which is named after the famed lobbyist Col. Joe Rickey.  He was a popular figure, first in Missouri politics and later in the nation’s capital from the 1870s into the new century. A Democrat, he successfully campaigned for President Grover Cleveland in 1884 and 1892.

It originally calls for simple syrup and club soda, but I liked the idea of skipping the syrup and soda for a ginger ale.  The DC Rickey Cocktail is undoubtably a refreshing drink and perfect for spring and summer, and I’m not a big Gin drinker.  I really love this one, I think it will be the perfect cocktail to start off with at the bar before dinner tonight.  I will let you know if they muster up to my mixology standards.

Cheers, Amy

P.S: follow me on instagram, I will be posting pics of my trip, hopefully with lots of cherry blossoms!

This looks so light and refreshing, I love lime in cocktails. My daughter was working in DC last year and I loved visiting her, what fabulous restaurants!
