Gluten Free Blood Orange Cake

Gluten Free Blood Orange Cake is a sweet, tart and dense cake.  A delicious way to enjoy the seasonal Blood Orange.

Blood orange puree:

  • medium blood oranges washed well and sliced into rounds
  • cups  water


  • cups  blood orange puree
  • 1/2  cup  butter melted
  • egg lightly beaten
  • 1 1/2  cups  gluten free flour
  • cup  coconut sugar
  • tbsp  baking powder
  • 1/2  tsp  salt


  • juice of 1 blood orange about 1/4 cup
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar


Blood Orange Puree:

  1. In a medium saucepan bring sliced blood oranges and water to a boil.
  2. Cover set heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Transfer to blender and blend until completely smooth. Measure out two cups of the pulp.


  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour a 9" round baking pan and line the bottom with a circle of parchment paper. Set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, combine two cups of the blood orange puree with the melted butter and egg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.  Pour the orange mixture into the flour mixture and gently fold together with a rubber spatula until just combined.
  4. Bake in centre of oven for about 40 minutes, or until cake is golden brown and set in the center. Use. Cake tester if unsure.
  5. Let cool a few minutes in pan, then invert onto a cooling rack to cool completely.


  1. Whisk together juice and confectioners' sugar.
  2. Set cake on serving plate and gently pour glaze over cake once it's completely cool.
  3. Top with sliced oranges for appearances.
