What are Macronutrients and Micronutrients

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Renew Life for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

What are Macronutrients and Micronutrients? Our bodies are complicated when it comes to their nutritional needs in order to survive and function.

The composition of our diet is essential in meeting those needs and keeping our bodies healthy.

Though our bodies are complicated in its nutritional needs, meeting those nutritional needs is NOT complicated. Not complicated at all, actually rather simple.

To meet those needs you need to eat real food. Two different types of nutrients come from real food and can be split into macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).

With chronic Disease accounting for 70% of deaths in our society and also accounting for 80% of our health care costs meeting our nutritional needs with real food is imperative.

Eat for wellness. Eat meats, vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fruit, little starch and NO added sugar.

Macronutrients come in the form of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

These three macronutrients all have their own specific role and function within our body and supply us with calories that we use as energy.

The cleaner the macronutrient the cleaner the calorie and the quicker and more efficient our body can burn that calorie and use it to grow, develop and fuel our bodies.

Fueling and Repairing our bodies.

Protein such as fish, steak, chicken, and pork are essential in fueling our body and in repairing and regenerating our tissue, cells and having a healthy immune system. All that fueling and regenerating happen when our body digests protein and breaks it down into amino acids.

All of us need nine essential amino acids that can only be found in real protein foods.

How do Carbohydrates turn into Energy?

Carbohydrates are organic compounds and they need to come from vegetables, potatoes, rice and some fruits. Carbohydrates are made up of small chains of sugar which your body breaks down into an energy source. Your diet, my diet all of our diets should be made up of about 45-65% of vegetables.

Healthy Fats are good for our brain.

Fats are your friend and are essential to a healthy diet and should account for about 15-20% of what we all consume.

They help keep our brain sharp, help cells functioning at an optimal level and protect our bodies organs and to absorb vitamins found in our foods. Make sure your fats are coming from nuts seeds and healthy fats.

Quality of food matters for energy, metabolism, inflammation and mental wellness.

How you choose your macronutrients affects the quality of micronutrients you feed your body. Quality matters and variety matters when choosing your food sources.

Micronutrients work in tandem with our macronutrients, so making sure you are eating seasonally, cycling through different sources of foods ensures you are getting a wide range of foods to ensure a micronutrient balance. The cleaner your macronutrient typically the higher your micronutrient content.

They work at keeping our bodies functioning in order to maintain energy levels, metabolism, cell function and our physical and mental wellbeing.
