The Mint Julep rules as the official Kentucky Derby cocktail but what makes up a mint julep? A mint julep is traditionally made with four ingredients: mint leaf, bourbon, sugar, and water. I went a step further and added some Tart Cherry, Pomegranate and Lime Juice. Adding the juice technically turns this into a cocktail, but you can call it a Cocktail or Mint Julep if you like.
The mint julep has been promoted by Churchill Downs in association with the Kentucky Derby since 1938. Each year almost 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs over the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. I think my Tart Cherry Pomegranate Bourbon Cocktail is way better than the boring old Julep. I used Tart Cherry Juice, Pomegranate Juice, Fresh Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, Four Roses Bourbon and Mint. Easy-Peasy and quite delicious.
While you are watching the three-year-old Thoroughbreds run one and a quarter miles at Churchill Downs enjoy the race with a Tart Cherry Pomegranate Bourbon Cocktail.
Did you know that the geldings (boys) carry 126 pounds and fillies (girls) 121 pounds? The race is known in the United States as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” for its approximate length of time. It is also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winner? Just some fun facts you can throw around while you are your party sipping on your cocktail.
