A Hearty, Healthy Burger Recipe You’ll Crave!
Sometimes, it’s hard to choose what to make for dinner. I think we’ve all been there: hurrying through the grocery store, trying to grab something for a quick meal that will still be healthy, and just blanking! Well, this burger recipe solves the “what do I make?” problem.
With just a pound of ground beef, some cheese, and a handful of other ingredients, you can whip up a richly satisfying dinner that your whole family will love. Sitting down to a warm, homemade mushroom swiss burger is bliss! The melting swiss cheese is optional, but adds a great touch of buttery, nutty flavor.
What Ingredients Will I Need?
To make these burgers, you only need the basics: beef, seasonings, mushrooms, and some other basics. Here’s the list:
For the Burgers
- Ground Beef: Grass fed ground beef. 90% lean is my favorite, but you can use ground beef with more fat if you prefer.
- Italian Seasonings: Dried Italian herb seasoning is great with beef. If you don’t have any on hand, try using a mixture of basil, oregano, and a little bit of rosemary, or use another herb combo that you like.
- Garlic Salt: Or a combination of garlic powder and regular salt.
- Worcestershire Sauce: A little goes a long way, so measure this strong, flavorful sauce carefully.
- Ghee: Ghee is butter that has had the milk solids and water removed, which makes it great for sauteing without burning. It also has a slightly deeper, nuttier flavor than plain melted butter. You can also use olive oil or another oil of your choice.
Mushroom Mix
- Ghee: Or extra virgin olive oil.
- Mushrooms: Cremini mushrooms, stems removed and caps diced.
- Onion: I like to use a sweet yellow onion, peeled and diced.
For Serving
- Swiss Cheese: Optional, but delicious!
- English Muffins: Sourdough English muffins, toasted.
Are Baby Bella and Crimini Mushrooms the Same Thing?
Yes, you may also find cremini mushrooms marketed as “baby bellas.” These cute, round mushrooms are actually slightly less-mature portobello mushrooms, which is where the name “baby bella” comes from. Cremini mushrooms are fantastic on a mushroom swiss burger, but feel free to swap in whatever mushrooms you enjoy.
What Does Grass Fed Mean?
Grass fed beef means that the cows were given grass to eat, rather than being fed a diet of corn or other grain. Cows naturally spend their days grazing, and many experts believe that cows given grass are healthier than cows that are grain-fed. Grass fed beef tends to be very flavorful, as well!
How to Make This Mushroom Swiss Burger Recipe
This process is very easy and straightforward, which makes it a great choice for busy weeknights. Essentially, you’re just going to cook the mushrooms and onions, and then make the ground beef patties and cook those in the same pan. Easy cleanup, too!
- Make the Mushroom Mix. Melt ghee in a heavy skillet over medium heat. Cook the mushrooms in the melted ghee for about 3 – 4 minutes, stirring now and then. Add the onions, and cook for a few minutes longer. Set the mixture aside to cool for a few minutes.
- Make the Burger Patties. When the mushrooms and onions have cooled slightly, combine them with the ground beef, Italian herbs, garlic salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix with your hands until everything is evenly blended, and form the mixture into four equal patties.
- Cook the Burgers. Wipe out your pan, and place it back over medium heat. Melt one tablespoon of the ghee, and then cook the patties, making sure they don’t touch. I cook mine for 5 minutes on the first side, and 3 – 4 minutes on the second side, for medium doneness.
- Add Cheese (If Using). If you do want to use the swiss cheese, go ahead and add it to the burgers. Then turn off the heat, cover the pan, and let the cheese melt for 1 – 2 minutes.
- Enjoy! Serve the burgers on toasted sourdough English muffins.
Tips for Success
What else should you know about this easy recipe? Glad you asked! Here are my top tips and tweaks for making this easy mushroom swiss burger. Seriously you guys, these are so good, you’ll want to serve them every night!
- Doneness: The instructions here will cook the burgers medium, which is how I like them – but feel free to add or subtract some of the cook time to make them a little more done, or a little more rare.
- Toppings: A mushroom and swiss burger is great with just the cheese and ‘shrooms, but feel free to add toppings like lettuce, tomato, or pickle if that’s your thing!
- Buns: I find that a toasted sourdough English muffin makes a really good burger bun, and it can sometimes be easier to find whole wheat, sprouted, or organic English muffins than buns. Still, don’t hesitate to swap in your favorite hamburger buns, kaiser rolls, or whatever you like.
- Lettuce Wraps: For a bunless burger, try wrapping the patty, cheese, and mushroom mix in large pieces of Romaine, leaf lettuce, or even a “cooking” green like collards.
What to Serve with a Mushroom Swiss Burger
A hearty mushroom swiss burger is irresistible all on its own, and even more so with a great side dish (or two). These healthy recipes would be perfect!
- Grilled Veggies: A Grilled Vegetable Plate is always welcome around here! These flavorful vegetables can be made on an outdoor grill, or on a grill pan – either would be great.
- Pasta Salad: Who could resist a little dish of pasta salad with their burger? Cold, fresh, and healthy, this Quick and Easy Italian Pasta Salad is a family favorite.

Storing and Reheating the Leftovers
The mushroom and swiss burger patties can both be stored in the fridge for up to four days. Store them in airtight containers for maximum freshness. Reheat the burgers (without the buns) in the oven at 350°F until warmed through.
Can I Freeze These?
Yes, you can freeze these, preferably without the added cheese. Mushroom and swiss burger patties will keep in the freezer for four months or so. Thaw in the fridge before reheating.
