Ingredients for making a superfood smoothie.

Recipe Ingredients

Avocado and almond-coconut milk add loads of natural creaminess to every sip. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact amounts.

  • Blueberries – Use fresh or frozen.
  • Spinach – Go for baby spinach. Regular spinach works too if you chop off the stems.
  • Almond-coconut milk – You can also use just almond, coconut, or oat milk.
  • Avocado – This is a great opportunity to use up avocados that have started to brown.
  • Chia seeds – Flax seeds add a similar crunch.
  • Cinnamon – Feel free to use ground nutmeg.
  • Honey – You can also use maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Protein powder – Vanilla and chocolate both work.
  • Ice – Crushed ice is best.

How To Make A Blueberry Superfood Smoothie

There’s no excuse for mixing breakfast, especially with this smoothie only requiring 5 minutes. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card.

  • Fill it. Place all of the ingredients in the blender, adding the spinach and protein powder last for easy blending.
  • Blend it. Process everything until smooth. Serve and enjoy!

Tips & Variations

Even if you’re out of ice or want to add creamy almond butter, there’s a version of this easy superfood smoothie for you.

  • Make it fruitier. Frozen berries, ripe bananas, and diced mangos will give you a fruitier sip.
  • More protein. Add 1/2 block of soft tofu or 1-2 tablespoons almond butter to the blender for extra plant-based protein.
  • Skip the ice. As long as the blueberries are frozen, and the avocado, milk, and spinach are cold, you don’t really need ice for this smoothie.
  • Prep freezer-packs. Except for the coconut milk and honey, add all of the ingredients to a small freezer bag. Keep it in the freezer for last-minute breakfasts. Add the milk and honey before blending.
  • Make it chocolatey. Stir 1/2-1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolatey smoothie. You can also top the drink with mini chocolate chips.
  • More add-ins. Add 2 tablespoons shredded coconut, quick oats, or freeze-fried strawberries for extra texture.

Serving Suggestions

This creamy superfood smoothie is a great part of any breakfast. Pair it with some Protein Pancakes, Chocolate Buckwheat Pancakes, or Protein Pop Tarts for something sweet. Try it with my Egg White Bites or Avocado Toast with Egg for something savory.

Can I Make This In Advance?

Of course! Prepare it up to 3 days in advance and refrigerate it until ready to serve. The mixture might separate but you can stir it until smooth again.

  1. Delicious! Love the addition of cinnamon, makes it taste like a “treat”! Fits perfectly in my NutriBullet too! Thanks, great recipe!

  2. Absolutely delicious!

Having just recently turned my eating habits around and buying a vitamix blender my partner and I were delight to find this delicious recipe that is infinitely tastier than than my old/unhealthy breakfasts. We both also find it makes you feel better/brighter/more energetic for the morning (we mix it with chocolate pro max lean protein powder).

I would unreservedly recommend people try making this smoothie. It is a trusted staple for us now.

    1. Hi Caroline, Thank you so much for sharing your opinion on my smoothie. It is definitely a great way to start the morning, or to enjoy after a workout. Enjoy your vitamix, and keep up the healthy eating. xo Amy

  3. Really yummy! Love the coconut milk and avocado in there. I didn’t have any seeds or protein powder, but it’s still tasty.

  4. It tastes great and I will definitely make it again. I halved the recipe for the sake of calories. Only issue I ran into was needing to add more almond milk as the blender would blend it. But it worked out great! Light and refreshing!

  5. I just made this because I was looking for a creamy smoothie with avocado for my cleanse I am doing and it is AMAZING! I get that some people have to make adjustments to the original but then you really cant comment on said original one because they changed it…the only change I made was using Vanilla Almond milk because I didnt have coconut and halving the recipe as I wanted to cut the 450 calories. One of my favorite smoothies!

      zlmom,
Glad to hear you like the smoothie, it is amazing how good it is. That avocado makes it so smooth and delicious. Yes, anytime you change the ingredients in a recipe, the results change. Cause and Effect. xo Amy

  6. I left out the chia seeds and protein powder because I did not have them available. This is the best smoothie I’ve ever had. It’s my first one with spinach. I also think the cinnamon just makes it delicious. Will need to start following your blog. Thanks for the recipe.

      Nora,
So glad you like the smoothie, leaving out the chia seeds will not change the taste, as chia seeds are flavorless, just a great source of omega. FYI, you can pretty much add spinach to most smoothies, without a negative taste, the spinach is great with banana and strawberry smoothies too. Thanks for commenting. Amy

  7. Hi there. This was my first avo smoothie and loved it. I also added apple peeled and cored by accident and its just as yum! Mine was also greyish prob because I blended the spinach and apple first before adding the remaining ingredients. Will definitely Krupp this one on probably as a lunch alternative at work at the desk!

  8. just a nod to the person who didn’t like the smoothie. WHICH blender you use DOES make a difference. I have a high powered blender now (vitamix, but I imagine Blendtec or the like would deliver a similiar consistency), and it puts all other blenders I had previously to shame. Seriously. It’s the difference between pulverized juice and a consistency that reminds me of already-chewed-for-you-spinach . . . that could easily explain why someone would use such a passionate word as “gross.” I liked it. Obviously not as sweet as if you omitted the spinach, but it doesn’t bother me . . and my kids drank it too. That’s as good as it gets! :-d
